Australia and New Zealand are both located in Oceania in the Southern Hemisphere. They are popular destinations for many international students, and plenty of people also dream of migrating there.

Australia boasts stunning beaches, the Great Barrier Reef and other World Heritage Sites, as well as international cities such as Sydney and Melbourne.

Australia is the only country in the world that occupies an entire continent. It has a population of around 24 million, and its number of international students ranks only behind the UK and the US globally.

New Zealand consists of two main islands: the North Island and the South Island. Wellington, the capital city, and Auckland, its largest city, are both on the North Island, which serves as New Zealand’s top tourist destination.

The South Island is home to smaller towns with sparse population. Its most striking attractions include mountains, lakes and glaciers, which are hugely popular among hiking enthusiasts.

Both countries feature high-quality educational institutions and systems, with all courses delivered in English. For Chinese applicants, admission is available as long as they meet language requirements, with no need to learn another foreign language.

So what are the differences between the two countries? How should students choose between them? Let’s find out!

Education System and Course Offerings

Similarities

Universities in Australia and New Zealand are world‑renowned and offer a wide range of courses. It is easy for students to find programmes that match their needs.

Differences

Australia has a much larger landmass and therefore more universities, giving applicants greater choices in courses, locations and campuses.

Larger universities generally have higher student intakes and more active student societies. That said, smaller institutions have their own strengths; smaller class sizes allow for more focused teaching quality.

New Zealand’s eight national universities provide mainstream disciplines including business, communication studies, science and humanities. Each university also has its own flagship specialisations.

For instance, Lincoln University excels in terrestrial sciences such as biology and environmental studies. Massey University is famous for animal and equine science, while the University of Auckland is well‑known for its strong engineering programmes.

Culture and Lifestyle

Similarities

Both Australia and New Zealand are welcoming and friendly to international students and tourists. There are sizeable Chinese communities in both countries, so you can easily find familiar Chinese food when missing home.

Differences

Australia is world‑famous for its beaches and the Great Barrier Reef. Most Australians live in coastal cities. Trips to the beach have long been a core part of Australian culture.

Outdoor sports are also extremely popular. Many Australians take part in organised sports and regular competitions such as cricket and Australian Rules Football.

While New Zealand also has beaches and numerous lakes, it is better known for mountain sports. Hiking and mountaineering are easily accessible within its national parks.

Beyond mountain activities, New Zealand is famous for extreme adventure sports, as it is the birthplace of bungee jumping.

Climate

Similarities

Australia and New Zealand are both in the Southern Hemisphere. Melbourne and Auckland share similar latitudes. Their seasons are reversed compared with China: June to August is winter, and Christmas falls in summer.

Differences

Australia is far larger than New Zealand, so its climate varies dramatically across regions. Northern Australia is close to the equator and warmer than central and southern areas.

Northeast Australia has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Southern cities including Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane experience four seasons. Summers can be extremely hot, while winters are mild.

Overall, New Zealand is colder than Australia, with warm and pleasant summers.

Cities

Similarities

Major cities in Australia and New Zealand host large Chinese populations and Chinatowns, making them great options for study abroad and migration.

Differences

Australian cities are multicultural and diverse. Sports, theatre, food, music and art all thrive there.

Melbourne and Sydney are not only ranked among the world’s most liveable cities, but also feature in the top ten most student‑friendly cities globally.

Compared with Australian cities, New Zealand’s urban areas are much smaller, yet still highly liveable.

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with a population of roughly 1.6 million. Two national universities are located in central Auckland, making it a top choice for international students.

Outside Auckland, most cities have populations below 400,000. If you prefer young university towns, Wellington and Dunedin are worth considering. Although Dunedin is small with around 100,000 residents, it remains one of New Zealand’s most popular cities for overseas students.

Australia and New Zealand are both favoured destinations for Chinese international students. Both are repeatedly listed among the world’s most liveable countries. After reading this introduction, are you interested in either of them?
