Changes to Master’s Admission Requirements for Study in Canada

  1. 1.Additional Special Application Requirements for Institutions
The Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto has introduced special new application requirements for candidates entering in September this year. Applicants need to submit a 2‑4 minute presentation video. Before recording the video, students must first submit a short essay of no more than 1,500 English characters based on a topic assigned by the school. During the video presentation, students pick one topic from three randomly provided by the university and deliver an impromptu speech.

  2. 2.Academic Credential Verification for International Students
Starting this year, the University of Toronto requires international undergraduate applicants to complete academic credential verification. Previously, among Canadian universities, only the University of Ottawa imposed this requirement for postgraduate programmes. Students should submit transcripts, graduation certificates, degree certificates and other relevant documents to the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center for verification as required by the university. The center will then send the verified documents directly to the institution.

Since the verification process takes roughly two months, students are advised to start planning their overseas study applications in the second semester of Grade 11.

  1. 3.Higher GMAT Requirements for Master’s Applications
For Canadian business and management master programmes, the competitive GMAT score threshold has risen year by year. A score of 550 used to be acceptable, while now applicants need 600‑650 to remain competitive. Top universities set even higher bars. For example, applicants to the Master of Management and Professional Accounting programme at the University of Toronto could gain admission with 680‑700 GMAT points in previous years, but the benchmark has climbed to 724.

Preparation Checklist for Canadian Master’s Applications

  1. 1.Bachelor’s Degree Requirement
Generally, graduate schools in Canadian universities require applicants to hold a four‑year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Alternatively, applicants should have completed the first semester of their final undergraduate year and provide proof that they will obtain their graduation and degree certificates within the same year.
For students with upgraded college education or self‑taught undergraduate qualifications, gaining admission to Canadian postgraduate programmes is relatively difficult, though exceptions exist.

  2. 2.Strong GPA Performance in the Final Two Undergraduate Years
For Canada’s first‑tier and second‑tier universities offering master’s degrees, applicants normally need a GPA of 3.0 or above (or equivalent 75% average) in their last two years of undergraduate study. Poor academic performance in these two years will drag down your GPA and jeopardize your application plan.

  3. 3.Satisfactory English Proficiency Scores
Canadian master programmes generally accept TOEFL, IELTS or other English test results such as MELAB and CanTest. GRE is only required for STEM majors at selected universities. MBA applicants must submit GMAT scores. Always check the specific requirements of target universities before application to prepare in a targeted manner.

  4. 4.Choose Majors Consistent with Undergraduate Background
Canadian master’s applicants are usually expected to hold relevant undergraduate academic backgrounds. Bachelor’s degree holders cannot apply for any master’s programme indiscriminately. Except for MBA, nearly all Canadian master’s degrees require applicants to have completed an undergraduate major in the same field. Even with a matching undergraduate background, admission is not guaranteed for certain special majors such as Law, Accounting and Medicine.

  5. 5.Compose Personalised Application Documents
Application document preparation is another critical step for Canadian master applications. Materials include a resume, 2‑3 reference letters and a Personal Statement (or Letter of Intent). These documents carry equal weight with GPA in the evaluation process. Graduate admissions teams review them to assess applicants’ research potential beyond academic transcripts.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Canadian Universities

  1. 1.Select Universities by City
This essentially means choosing which Canadian city to study in. Key considerations include living costs, networking opportunities, employment prospects, learning environment and climate.

Many Chinese international students opt for Toronto and Vancouver for the following reasons: first, friends or relatives of many Chinese students live and work in these two cities and can offer support. Second, these metropolises boast abundant cultural and social resources. Third, internships and job opportunities are plentiful, and top universities are concentrated here.

While large cities have obvious advantages, their living expenses are far higher than elsewhere. Canada’s educational resources are well distributed, with high‑quality universities in every province. Apart from Toronto and Vancouver, students may also consider Manitoba, Saskatchewan in central Canada and Nova Scotia in eastern Canada. Universities in these regions deliver high‑standard teaching at lower living costs, offering a quiet learning environment away from bustling urban areas. Once you decide on a city, you can shortlist suitable universities within it.

  1. 2.Select Universities Based on Your Personal Profile
Strong applicants can aim for top universities, while candidates with average qualifications should choose schools matching their profile. A strong profile refers to solid academic performance, good language scores and sufficient family financial support. If you have outstanding university grades, genuine achievements and passion in a specific subject area, plus high TOEFL or IELTS scores, applying to Canada’s prestigious universities is a natural choice.

Top universities enjoy high domestic and global reputation, with world‑class teaching and research capacity. Students gain greater access to international academic conferences and internships, studying alongside outstanding peers. Their graduates often become elites in business and politics. A master’s degree from a renowned university will boost your competitiveness in the job market.

It is reasonable to avoid blind pursuit of university rankings and elite school obsession. However, this does not mean top universities should be completely disregarded. Chinese families invest heavily to send their children to Canada for study, hoping they can attend good schools and majors to secure promising career prospects after graduation. This expectation is understandable. Overseas study is, in a sense, a form of elite education.
